Rep. P. Mike Jurry of Harper District on Tuesday officially launched a Savings and Internal Lending Club in Harper City of Maryland an initiative designed to strengthen women’s economic independence and promote grassroots development across the county.
The launch drew hundreds of women beneficiaries, who marched through Harper’s principal streets in a celebratory parade, signaling strong community support for the program and its objectives.
Speaking at the start of the indoor program held at Mary Go Round in Harper, Marlene Tarlah President of the SUSU club Board, praised their district lawmaker for introducing an initiative they described as timely and transformative, noting that it addresses long-standing financial challenges faced by women at the community level.
“This is something that should be celebrated by all of us here today,” she said, adding that the program reflects a genuine commitment to inclusive development.
Marlene explained that the initiative provides grants rather than traditional loans, allowing women to start or expand small businesses without the burden of immediate repayment, while encouraging collective responsibility within each group.
Under the program’s structure, funds are distributed to organized groups, with members agreeing to repay interest to the lending club while sharing the principal amount among themselves to sustain future lending.
Another beneficiary, Lutricia Wesseh described the launch as both a celebration and a tribute to Rep. Jurry’s continued contributions to the district, saying his efforts have brought tangible improvements to the lives of ordinary citizens especially women in the district.
The ceremony also featured traditional performances by residents of Maryland County Electoral District #1, underscoring the cultural significance of the occasion.
At the occasion, Maryland County Superintendent Henry Cole, made a remark, he commended Rep. Jurry’s leadership, highlighting the importance of elected officials reinvesting in their constituencies to promote long-term development.
Beyond the lending club, Rep. Jurry announced additional contributions aimed at strengthening public safety and communication infrastructure in the county.
He presented two motorcycles to the Maryland County Police Detachment to improve patrol capacity and enhance community security, along with another motorcycle donated to his newly established radio station.
The lawmaker also inaugurated a new radio station intended to expand access to information across Maryland County and donated an internet package to the Intellectual Center on the 18 in Harper to support education and digital connectivity.
Together, these initiatives highlight Rep. Jurry’s broader development agenda, combining women’s empowerment, public safety, education, and communication.
Hon. Jurry in his remark said the strong turnout and public enthusiasm reflect the program’s potential to improve livelihoods and create lasting economic opportunities for women throughout Maryland County.
