STATEMENT AGAINST DRUG ABUSE

ree

We must unite and take a firm stand against the pervasive and destructive scourge of drug abuse that is ravaging our communities in Liberia. The drug crisis, particularly the widespread use of substances like "kush," poses a severe and existential threat to the future of our nation. It is not merely a social problem; it is a national emergency that undermines our public health, national security, and economic development.

The data is alarming. One in five Liberian youths is reportedly using illicit drugs, with hundreds of drug dens operating across our capital. This epidemic is consuming our most valuable resource—our young people—and is destroying families and communities. The trauma of our civil war and persistent challenges such as poverty and unemployment have created a fertile ground for this menace to take root. We see the devastating consequences every day: increased crime, violence, and a generation of young Liberians trapped in a cycle of addiction, unable to contribute to the nation's rebuilding and progress.

We commend the efforts of the government and various civil society organizations, particularly the women's groups who are at the forefront of this fight, for raising their voices and demanding action. However, more decisive and comprehensive action is needed. We must move beyond declarations and implement a multi-faceted strategy that includes:

  1.  Enforcement: Strengthening our drug laws and providing the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency with the resources and authority to effectively combat drug trafficking.

  2. Rehabilitation: Establishing and adequately funding accessible and humane rehabilitation centers to provide treatment and support for those struggling with addiction.

  3. Prevention and Education: Launching robust and sustained public awareness campaigns, particularly in schools and communities, to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse.

  4. Economic Opportunity: Addressing the root causes of drug abuse by creating educational and job opportunities for our youth, giving them a reason to choose a path of hope over despair.

The fight against drug abuse is a collective responsibility. It requires the unwavering commitment of the government, the vigilance of law enforcement, the dedication of civil society, and the active participation of every Liberian citizen. can not afford to lose another generation to this crisis. Let us work together to rescue our youth, reclaim our future, and build a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous Liberia for all.
